Netflix is bringing royal drama back to the screen with its latest feature-length film, “Scoop,” offering a dramatized retelling of Prince Andrew’s infamous interview with “Newsnight” anchor Emily Maitlis.
The streaming giant dropped the trailer for “Scoop,” featuring Gillian Anderson as Emily Maitlis and Rufus Sewell as Prince Andrew, offering a glimpse into the toe-curling interview that sent shockwaves through the British monarchy.
Joining the cast are Keeley Hawes as Amanda Thirsk, Andrew’s former private secretary, and Billie Piper as Sam McAlister, the “Newsnight” producer instrumental in securing the controversial interview. The film is based on McAlister’s book, titled “Scoops.”
Prince Andrew’s interview with Maitlis in November 2019 garnered widespread criticism, earning the label of a “car crash” as he addressed allegations of sexual assault and his association with convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. Despite settling a sexual assault suit with Virginia Giuffre, Andrew showed little remorse and offered implausible explanations for his actions, including citing a loss of ability to sweat and an evening spent at a Pizza Express in Woking.
The fallout from the interview prompted Prince Andrew to step back from public duties and led to his eventual removal from military titles and patronages by Queen Elizabeth II.
McAlister’s firsthand account of booking the interview, published in 2022, caught the attention of filmmakers, leading to the adaptation of “Scoop” with The Lighthouse and Voltage producing.
Meanwhile, Maitlis is also working on an adaptation of the interview with Blueprint Pictures for Amazon, featuring Michael Sheen and Ruth Wilson.
“Scoop” is set to premiere on Netflix on April 5, promising viewers an inside look at one of the most controversial moments in recent royal history.
