In January, Netflix will feature several noteworthy projects, including Sofia Vergara‘s transformation into a cartel boss, a fresh take on the Uruguayan rugby team’s 1972 Andes crash story, Kevin Hart leading a daring heist crew, and Dan Levy dealing with loss and grief.
On January 4, Netflix premieres “Society of the Snow,” directed by Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona. This film retells the incredible saga of the Uruguayan rugby team’s crash-landing on an Andean glacier in 1972, where survivors had to resort to extreme measures to survive. The movie, which garnered numerous awards on the international film festival circuit and earned four 2024 Academy Awards shortlist nominations, including Best International Feature Film.
Starting on January 5, Netflix presents “Good Grief,” a dramedy written, directed, and starring Dan Levy. Levy portrays a London-based artist who spends a year mourning his husband before discovering surprising truths about their relationship during a trip to Paris with friends Ruth Negga and Himesh Patel. This film marks the first project under Netflix’s partnership with Levy’s production company, Not a Real Production Company.
On January 12, Kevin Hart’s latest Netflix feature, “Lift,” takes off. The story revolves around Cyrus Whitaker (Hart), the leader of an international heist team tasked with stealing $500 million in gold from a mid-air passenger plane before it falls into the wrong hands. The ensemble cast includes Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Vincent D’Onofrio, Úrsula Corberó, Billy Magnussen, Jacob Batalon, Jean Reno, and Sam Worthington, with F. Gary Gray directing from Daniel Kunka’s script.
Sofia Vergara, known for her role in Modern Family, undergoes a dramatic transformation in the Netflix series “Griselda,” debuting on January 25. Vergara portrays Griselda Blanco, the merciless Colombian “Godmother” responsible for establishing one of history’s most profitable cartels. This six-episode limited series is produced by the creators and executive producers of Narcos and Narcos: Mexico, offering a thrilling narrative within the same universe.
Additionally, Netflix adds a variety of movies to its library in January, including “Annabelle,” “Aquaman,” “Bruce Almighty,” “John Wick” series, “Jurassic Park” trilogy, “Mamma Mia!” and many more.
