In terms of reviews, the film has a 58% score from critics’ reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, contrasting with the strong 96% score the audience gave.
As with a lot of popular movies, the critics hate it, the paying punters cant get enough.
The Greatest Showman featuring Hugh Jackman is another example.
Back to the Italian plumbers and the film has raked in over of $508.7 million worldwide.
Warcraft
That makes it both the biggest film of 2023 so far as well as the highest-earning video game movie of all time in screenings in America.
The previous record holder was Warcraft, which had a global take of $439 million.
Previously, Detective Pikachu and Warcraft held the top gaming film spots with over $400 million.
It also became Illumination’s biggest opening in history overtaking the original Minions.
Also, Mario is showing no signs of slowing down and is expected to hit the $1B mark.
It’s playing to huge audiences and is the No. 1 release of 2023 in 26 countries including Australia, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, UK & Ireland and Spain.
The Top 5 run down for grosses: Mexico ($52M), UK & Ireland ($43.8M) Germany ($29.7M), France ($21.2M) and Australia ($19.8M ).
UK performance
Audiences shelled out a further £7.6m on Universal animation The Super Mario Bros. Movie, as the blockbuster dropped just 14% on its opening session to comfortably hold the UK-Ireland box office lead, reports Screen Daily.
Mario increased its Sunday takings by 9% compared to its opening session with over £2m on that day alone, boosted by the end of the school Easter holidays.
The film is already up to a huge £35.9m total and is tracking to finish as one of the big hits of the year; it will enter the UK-Ireland top 100 highest-grossing films of all time within the next week, and should easily finish within the top 50 by the end of its run.
