Even though Transformers: Rise of the Monsters is the eighth installment in a huge franchise, it may have accomplished something even more significant.
The most recent trailer for the movie reveals that in addition to introducing Maximals, Predacons, and Terrorcons, it may also be the first time a transgender character has ever appeared in the Transformers movie universe.
With the latest teaser, Arcee received some attention and displayed her talents in a number of action scenes. Anode and Lug were heavily featured as transsexual robotic characters in the IDW comic series, as long-time Transformers fans may recall. Yet, in All Hail Optimus Part 3: The Means And The Message, Arcee acknowledged that she was the person “[s]he] was always meant to be” while calling herself a “forged male” in those same comics.
The potential of transsexual Cybertrons and even Decepticons has long been accepted by the franchise. Even though it was canonical at the time that robots had no gender, Howlback chose to identify as a female in the first-generation cartoon. With its Ask Vector Prime function, which was a key component of the official Transformers website back when the Transformers: Cybertron animation was airing, Hasbro themselves confirmed the possibility that there might be transgender robots in the series.
Despite potential worries that it would disrupt previously established continuity for the movie franchise, fans currently have great expectations for the movie. The most that can be inferred at this time is that the film will draw heavily on the popular 1990s classic BeastWars: Transformers.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will burst its way into theaters on June 9, 2023
