Disney+ is digging up a beloved classic with a fresh twist! A gender-swapped reboot of Holes, Louis Sachar’s iconic 1998 novel and the 2003 film, is officially in the works. The streaming giant has greenlit a pilot for the reimagined series, which will follow a teenage girl navigating the mysterious, dusty trenches of a detention camp.
Same Camp, New Lead
Written by Alina Mankin and helmed by showrunner Liz Phang, this updated take on Holes centres on a young girl sent to a detention camp where the tyrannical Warden forces campers to dig holes for a suspicious (and secretive) purpose. If you thought the original Camp Green Lake was rough, imagine taking it on in 2025.
Phang and Mankin will executive produce alongside Drew Goddard and Sarah Esberg from Goddard Textiles, as well as Walden Media, which was behind the 2003 film. And for fans worried about staying true to the essence of Holes, the film’s original producer, Mike Medavoy, is also on board.
A Classic Worth Revisiting
The original Holes film, directed by Andrew Davis with a screenplay by Sachar himself, starred Shia LaBeouf as Stanley Yelnats IV, a teen sentenced to hard labour at the infamous Camp Green Lake. The star-studded cast included Sigourney Weaver as the sinister Warden, Jon Voight, Patricia Arquette, Tim Blake Nelson, and the legendary Eartha Kitt.
The movie became a cult favourite, balancing mystery, humour, and heartfelt moments—all while digging deep into themes of family curses, friendship, and redemption.
Will the Reboot Strike Gold?
While many reboots have had mixed success, this gender-swapped version promises to bring a fresh perspective while keeping the story’s adventurous spirit alive. Can it fill the big boots left by the original Holes? We’ll have to wait and see.
