“Love Is Blind” contestants Sara Carton and Ben Mezzenga became a viral phenomenon due to the reasons for the break-up.
On “Love Is Blind,” Netflix’s flagship reality dating series, contestants meet one another while staying in isolated “pods,” in which they cannot see their prospective partners but can speak with them.
When they do finally meet in person, they can see if beauty is skin deep, or the ‘connection’ they made in the pods was enough.
Declined
The row happened when Carton declined Mezzenga’s marriage proposal at the altar in the series finale, citing their differing views on LGBTQ rights, the COVID-19 vaccine and Black Lives Matter, sparking furious debate over whether Carton was right to let politics impede their relationship.
“I know that the connection we have is so real, and my heart is there. But we talked about a lot of the values I hold so close to my heart. Making this decision, my mind is telling me I can’t,” she said before walking out of the chapel.
As she walked toward a Black SUV, she nervously laughed, saying: “I’m fine. Get me out of here!”
She went on to recall a conversation she had with him about the Black Lives Matter movement. “I’m no expert, but like when I asked him about it, he was like, ‘I guess I never really thought too much about it,’” Carton said. “That affected me. Especially in our own city. How could you not.”
Conservative outrage
Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist behind the Turning Point USA reposted a video of the breakup, stating: “Best thing that never happened to this guy. Dodged a bullet,” likely referring to Carton’s politics.
Fox News host Laura Ingraham posted: “Let’s find him a nice, conservative 20-something girl. He’ll look back and laugh at this,” to which conservative commentator Tomi Lahren responded: “He dodged a bullet.”
