What We Do in the Shadows was originally is a mockumentary horror-comedy film co-written and directed by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. The film was released in 2014 and is a spin-off of a 2005 short film of the same name. The story revolves around a group of vampires who share a flat in Wellington, New Zealand.
The main characters are Viago (Taika Waititi), Vladislav (Jemaine Clement), Deacon (Jonathan Brugh), and Petyr (Ben Fransham), each representing a different archetype of vampire. The film humorously explores their everyday struggles and challenges, such as adapting to modern society, dealing with conflicts among themselves, and trying to fit into the human world.
The success of the film led to the creation of a television series adaptation with the same name. The TV series, also created by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, premiered in 2019 and expands on the concept with a new set of vampire characters living in Staten Island, New York.
