Has the game always had a satirical slant?
John Wills, a professor of American Studies at the University of Kent, who senses GTA IV was a deliberate effort from Rockstar to subvert the cartoonish vibrancy that had previously defined the series and make a story apt for a world that in 2008 was freefalling into a bleak global recession.
He told the BBC: “The grey tone of the city is such a contrast to the solar flare of Los Santos/Los Angeles [the setting for GTA: San Andreas], with a real focus on debt, the hard life, and realism.
“In GTA games there are enduring themes of the attraction of criminality, the pressure of personal failure, a sense of broader masculine crisis, and an America that consistently disappoints. But the futility of American uplift is more conspicuous and serious in GTA IV.”
While The Guardian also said: “Can a video game series that has made billions of dollars present a meaningful critique of American capitalism? It’s interesting to watch it try. To avoid becoming futile doomsaying, satire must accommodate the possibility of change. The cautionary tale should inspire transformation, if not in the protagonist then at least in the audience. By the end of GTA’s stories, however, even if the characters have learned something, the player is invited to continue their criminal exploits in perpetuity.”
GTA 5 aimed its satire at Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook.
GTA 6 satire
The new trailer shows how the world has evolved in the last 10 years.
Now in GTA 6 the trailer seems to acknowledge how live-streaming, Instagram Live, TikTok and public freakout videos flood the internet and pop culture.
Grand Theft Auto 6 also stars Lucia, the franchise’s first female protagonist.
By the time the game comes out, how different will life be?
