Brits were stunned to see a packet of chocolate digestives priced at £5.39, sparking disbelief and outrage. While food prices have risen significantly, many feel this is crossing a line.
The cost of a luxury snack?
Despite the recent inflation spike, spending over £5 for biscuits seems excessive to most people. Thankfully, this sky-high price isn’t typical in most places. If it were, there would likely be protests in the aisles across the UK.
Aldi enters the conversation
After the picture of the pricey digestives circulated online, Aldi joined the debate. The supermarket cheekily tweeted, “Belmont Chocolate Digestives: 69p,” reminding everyone that affordable alternatives are available.
While McVitie’s chocolate digestives are the nation’s favourite, they usually cost far less than £5.39 in major supermarkets, so no one needs to break the bank for a biscuit fix.
A history of Aldi’s supermarket spats
This isn’t Aldi’s first time joining in on supermarket drama. They famously sparked a playful feud with M&S over their Cuthbert the Caterpillar cake, which was accused of copying M&S’s Colin the Caterpillar. Aldi even launched a #FreeCuthbert campaign, poking fun at the legal row.
The issue eventually settled, but Aldi recently aired an advert proclaiming their caterpillar cake is “like M&S, only cheaper,” showing Colin and Cuthbert squaring off again. Here’s hoping we don’t see another caterpillar cake showdown anytime soon!
