Box office
The film, which stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken, took in a massive $93m (£72m) in its second weekend, according to studio estimates on Sunday (30 July).
It comes after Gerwig’s Mattel film broke the opening weekend record for a female director in the US. Patty Jenkins’ 2017 movie Wonder Woman held the previous record with a $103.3m (£80.3m) domestic opening.

The headline of the hard-hitting piece was “I can tell you the meaning of the Barbie movie that’s eluded so many critics. It’s a rallying cry for humans to have more babies!”
We assume the irony was not missed on the former PM and the number of children he has!
The farcical piece ends with: “That’s what the movie is. It’s a satire on the tragic plastic sterility of Barbie the doll and a great Mussolini-esque rallying cry for human fecundity.
“And it’s all driven by money, naturally. If no one has any babies, you won’t sell any dolls.”
