The Brexiter, who once ran to lead the party, has waded into the UK water system issues.
He tweeted: “Instead of forecasting a water shortage the water regulators and industry should collect and store more of the rain we are getting. Rivers are very full at the moment.”
Despite heavy rainfall in January, some reservoirs in south west (Colliford and Roadford) and east (Hanningfield, Abberton and Grafham) England have retained stubbornly low water stores.
Only four of the 14 regions monitored by the Environment Agency in England are now considered to have a normal level of water resources, while two regions – East Anglia and Devon, and Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly – still remain in drought status, reports ITV.
The National Drought Group (NDG) has warned that Britain may need further hosepipe bans and restrictions on water.
The NDG said: ‘Members are planning for the worst case scenario of another hot, dry summer and are managing water resources to reduce the risk of drought measures being required.’
The water shortage is likely to impact on the availability of vegetables – as two key agricultural regions in the UK are still in drought – East Anglia and Devon.
