US President Donald Trump has announced a universal “baseline” 10% tariff on all imports into the US, on what he has dubbed “Liberation Day”.
Trump also unveiled a 10% tariff on UK goods and 20% on EU goods in a watershed moment for global trade. The US will also hit certain countries with much steeper tariffs, as high as 50%.
He also said he will impose a tariff of 20% on the European Union, while China faces a tariff of 34%.
Trump said that the new tariffs, include a 25% tariff on all foreign-made automobiles, would become “effective” at midnight on Wednesday.
For decades, the president said, the US “has been looted, pillaged, raped and plundered by nations near and far, both friend and foe alike”.
