Lucy Letby, the former NHS neonatal nurse convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill six others, reportedly possesses keys to her own prison cell, leading to frustration among the families of her victims.
Letby, 34, was sentenced to a whole life order with no possibility of parole for her crimes committed at the Countess of Chester Hospital between 2015 and 2016. The revelation that she has been granted access to her own cell, allowing her to isolate from fellow inmates when desired, has sparked outrage and raised concerns about the perceived privileges awarded for good behavior.
A relative of one of the victims expressed dismay, stating, “We thought they were throwing away the key, and now it turns out she has her own.”
Held at the Category A HMP Bronzefield in Ashford, Surrey, Letby was previously incarcerated at HMP Low Newton in Durham, known for housing some of the UK’s most notorious female criminals.
An insider revealed, “It means if she wants to socialise she can, and if she wants privacy she can have that too. It’s really no different to living in a hotel – but you’re surrounded by criminals.”
Earlier reports indicated that Letby had formed connections with other convicted killers, including Michelle Smith and Shauna Hoare. The trio reportedly spent extensive time together, engaging in activities such as playing board games and sharing meals.
In August, Letby opted not to attend her sentencing, where she received 14 whole life terms from Mr. Justice Goss. The prosecution has decided to pursue a retrial in the case of Baby K, a girl born in February 2016. Letby later launched an appeal against all her convictions in September, while a public inquiry into her offenses formally commenced in November.
