The hunting fans paper of choice The Telegraph reported on a letter from vets that claimed foxes are suffering a “catastrophic decline” because of the hunting ban.
A letter to ministers calls for a thorough scientific review after huge fall in population following 2004 law.
However, as ever, all is not quite what is appears. This happens a lot with the right-wing press.
Here is Nigel Farage banging on about it as well?
Fox Hunting ban
It reported that the letter in fact admitted rural fox numbers are falling, but why you ask?
Surely fox hunters kill foxes…
Well, the devil is in the detail.
The reason the numbers are falling is that farmers/land managers are to blame.
To fill in the gap left by fox hunting, which only really got the weakest animals which couldn’t get away, foxes are being killed on an large scale.
a tougher zero tolerance attitude among land managers
The authors couched this claim by saying hunting was more discriminating in the foxes it killed – that it killed only the “weakest animals”. In other words, by the letter’s own admission, it’s gamekeepers and farmers that are responsible for an alleged plunge in rural fox numbers.
So swapping this ‘sport’ for large-scale culling of foxes is hardly a reason to bring back fox hunting.
Time to curb the farmers’ not bring back fox hunting?!
