Liz Truss frequently brought up her educational background during the Tory leadership race, but her remarks have since drawn criticism from both local politicians and some former students of the school.

She has spoken out about her time at Roundhay School, which is said to be located in a “leafy” Leeds neighbourhood and where she earned her A-Levels and finished high school.

Ms Truss attended the school in the late 1980s and early 1990s before graduating in 1993 and going on to study Politics, Philosophy, and Economics at Oxford Merton College (PPE).

During her PM campaign launch on Thursday, July 14, Ms Truss stated, ‘Many of the children I was at school with were let down by low expectations, poor educational standards, and a lack of opportunity.’

‘The reason I am a Conservative is because I saw kids at my school being let down in Leeds,’ she said in a TV debate on Sunday, July 17.

Ms Truss also stated in a speech in 2020, ‘As a comprehensive school student in Leeds in the 1980s and 1990s, I was struck by the lip service that the city council paid to equality while children from disadvantaged backgrounds were let down.’

‘While we were taught about racism and sexism, far too little time was spent ensuring that everyone could read and write.’

Frankie Boyle wasn’t having her blame her school for her failures however, especially after her performance since becoming Prime Minster.

I hope Liz Truss will now apologise to the school she said overlooked her potential
