This week Donald Trump made a HUGE u-turn on his tariff threats.
While Trump suddenly paused his “reciprocal” tariffs on other countries hours after they came into effect this week, he did not include China, instead increasing duties on Chinese imports as punishment for Beijing’s initial move to retaliate.
The French president, Emmanuel Macron, described the US president’s 90-day tariff pause – which sets most tariffs at 10% until July – as “fragile”.
Also, China has raised its tariffs on US products to 125% in the latest salvo of the trade dispute with Washington, just hours after Xi Jinping said there were “no winners in a tariff war”.
Numerous other tariffs Trump has announced since returning to the White House remain in place and are not affected by the pause.
That includes:
- 25% tariffs on all car imports to America, including from the UK
- 25% tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, including products made from these metals
- 25% tariffs on many imports from Mexico and Canada.
