Jack Monroe has returned to Twitter as the government has been urged to enter talks with junior doctors on their third day of strike action, while the number of people waiting for NHS treatment has peaked at 7.2 million.
Jack tweeted: “If the 47,000 doctors, consultants etc on strike, received a pay rise of £20k each per annum, that would total around £940m a year. Or £18,027,397 a week. Which still leaves £331,972,603 a week for the NHS from the big red bus promise post-Brexit. Shouldn’t be a problem then.”
It comes as Health Sec Steve Barclay said that Junior doctors’ strike asking for a 35% pay rise is ‘not reasonable.’ He “deeply regrets” the 96-hour strike – and that it has been deliberately timed to coincide with the period after Easter, he said.
So Jack’s maths might not be exactly on the button but it makes a valid point about the promises made in the run up to the Brexit vote.
She added: “(Obviously as a union member I’m aware that those striking do so to secure improved conditions for ALL their colleagues, not just those on the picket lines, I’m simply making a point!! Looks like there’s plenty in the Big Red Bus Budget for everyone anyway!)”
Threats
She also tweeted about an event she is scheduled to speak at.
Monroe wrote: “I’m scheduled to do a talk in Cambridge on the 22nd of April. The organisers have received multiple threats against me after advertising the event, and have asked if I want to cancel it. Absolutely fucking not. Tickets from £8 here. See you there.”
She added: “I’ve survived multiple violent assaults, rapes, CSA, poverty, starvation, addiction, alcoholism, DV, my own catastrophic fuckups, a kidnapping, two concussions, several suicide attempts, anaphylaxis, and a car accident. Y’all really think you’re gonna end me with an EMAIL?”
