Labour MPs that voted for ceasefire in Gaza, against leader Keir Starmer’s demands, could cause a split in party over the conflict.
Starmer had told his Labour MPs to abstain from a vote calling for a ceasefire in Gaza last night.
However, 56 rebelled anyway and await any disciplinary matters from the party machine.
Gaza Strip
The Israeli air force dropped leaflets in eastern areas of Khan Younis in the south of the Gaza Strip, telling people to evacuate to shelters for their own safety – suggesting imminent military operations in the area.
Israel’s president, Isaac Herzog, has said Israel cannot leave a vacuum in Gaza saying: “If we pull back, then who will take over? We can’t leave a vacuum. We have to think about what will be the mechanism; there are many ideas that are thrown in the air … But no one will want to turn this place, Gaza, into a terror base again.“
Labour MPs that voted for ceasefire in Gaza
Of all of the dissenters, eight of them were frontbenchers.
Four of those were shadow ministers: Jess Phillips, Yasmin Qureshi, Afzal Khan and Paula Barker.
In total, MPs voted 293 to 125 to reject the amendment calling for “all parties to agree to an immediate ceasefire” in the Gaza strip, which means it was rejected by a majority of 168.

Rayner
Angela Rayner wrote on X: “We all want the violence to end. I understand and respect those calling for a ceasefire now and I’m deeply sorry to have lost valued colleagues from the frontbench.”
Then added: “The international community has demanded that the siege conditions on Gaza be lifted, but that has still not happened. That is totally unacceptable and it cannot continue.”
