Disney’s live action “The Little Mermaid” has been a huge success as it raked in $95.5 million at the box office between May 26 and May 28.
The film, staring Halle Bailey, far exceeded the competition on Memorial Day weekend, especially as there was a ‘woke’ backlash due to the colour of Halle Bailey’s skin.
It was the fifth-biggest Memorial Day weekend film opening of all time.
Swimming laps
A report by The Hollywood Reporter’s Pamela McClintock described the reboot of Disney’s 1989 animated hit as “swimming laps around the competition,” as the movie is “headed for an estimated four-day domestic debut of $118.6 million, the holiday’s fifth-biggest opening of all time, according to final weekend actuals.”
The film was attacked by commentators on the right like The Daily Wire’s Matt Walsh over the decision to cast a Black actress, Halle Bailey, in the lead role of Ariel.
Looks fun behind the scenes!
Its closest competitor was “Fast X” — the 10th installment in the “Fast & Furious” franchise — which opened on May 19 and earned $23 million between May 26-28
There were a lot of reactions, and hate, when the trailer landed for the The Little Mermaid.
Halle Bailey is chuffed!
