A hugely popular Chinese restaurant in Coventry has landed a zero-star food hygiene rating—and inspectors say urgent improvements are needed.
Yi Pin Bai Wei and Haomen, located on Hales Street, is a hit with customers, boasting a 4.1-star rating on Google. However, when Coventry City Council inspected the kitchen in January, they found standards far below par.
🚨 Major hygiene concerns uncovered
Food hygiene inspectors check hundreds of businesses in Coventry every year. They assess cleanliness, food handling, and safety management—including pest control and storage procedures.
When they visited Yi Pin Bai Wei and Haomen on 14 January, they found serious failings. The council ordered the owners to make urgent improvements in several key areas.
🥡 What went wrong?
Inspectors found major problems with food safety management. They flagged issues with food handling, cleanliness, and storage.
Concerns included:
✅ Cooking, reheating, cooling, and food storage weren’t up to standard.
✅ Safety systems to ensure food was fit to eat were lacking.
✅ Cleanliness of the premises needed serious improvement.
✅ Condition of the facilities and building was deemed unacceptable.
Coventry City Council confirmed that “major improvements” were required before the restaurant could be deemed safe.
📢 What happens next?
The restaurant must now fix these hygiene issues or risk further action. The council will reinspect the premises to check if the necessary improvements have been made.
Despite the shocking hygiene score, many customers still rave about the food. But will diners keep coming back if standards don’t improve?
