Sewage spills in the UK have been mapped as British triathletes preparing for next month’s world championships can’t continue their open water swim training because of sewage in the sea off the coast of Lancashire, reports The Guardian.
Triathletes sewage
One competitor Adan Driver said of the pollution: “It is horrible and it is upsetting. You can smell it as well, especially on hot days, you can smell the sewage.”
The athlete, who swims off the coast of Lancashire, said: “I’ve just been on the app now and there are sewage alerts for the whole Lancashire coast. This is a daily occurrence now. It is getting to the point where it is just the norm now.”
Driver also planned to swim the length of the River Wyre in Lancashire. However, he said: “We’ve had to postpone it because it is too dangerous. I’ve been advised I would be risking my health if I swam in it.”
Sewage spills map
Sewage spills have been mapped as overspills in protected areas ‘topped 300,000 hours last year’ leaving the UK covered in sh*t.
Using mapping analysis, Greenpeace said it found sewage was poured into conservation sites for more than 300,000 hours last year, and identified almost 1,200 storm overflow pipes that discharged into our waterways.
Feargal Sharkey shared a map of sewage areas on the UK coastline and wrote: “Happening right now, at a sewage overflow near you.”
