The felling of the famous tree at Sycamore gap and the fire at the Crooked House pub have both been major talking points.
Now there have been arrests in both scandals.
Sycamore gap
First off and a 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage in connection with the felling of the famous Sycamore Gap tree, which featured in the Kevin Costner film, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.
Supt Kevin Waring, of Northumbria police, said: “This is a world-renowned landmark and the events of today have caused significant shock, sadness and anger throughout the local community and beyond.
“An investigation was immediately launched following this vandalism, and this afternoon we have arrested one suspect in connection with our inquiries.
“Given our investigation remains at a very early stage, we are keeping an open mind. I am appealing to the public for information to assist us – if you have seen or heard anything suspicious that may be of interest to us, please let us know.”
One of the Hair Bikers was fuming about it.
Mayor Jamie Driscoll wrote: “I can’t express how angry I am at the vandalism of the tree at #SycamoreGap. People have had their ashes scattered there. People have proposed there. I’ve picnicked there with my wife and kids. It’s part of our collective soul. We must bring whoever did this to justice.”
Crooked House
Also the pub once known as “Britain’s wonkiest” inn, in Staffordshire was burnt down on 5th August.
Two days later the house was demolished, which raised a lot of eyebrows.
Now a woman, 34, and a man, 44, both from Leicestershire, have been detained.
They were held on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson with intent or being reckless as to whether life was endangered, police said.
Three other men, aged 66, 51 and 33, all previously arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life, remain on bail.
Sean Thomas Know wrote: “This is the eco-version of The Crooked House pub demolition. However, with that you could see the clear benefit to the venal bastards that did it. Here, there is zero benefit to anyone. It is pointless sociopathy, and requiring chainsaws at night, in a remote place. Bizarre.”
However, arrests do not me proof of guilt, so the legal process most take place in both cases.
