A Sky News Sunak interview has been slammed, during the interview, instead of discussing the poverty crisis and school children going hungry, all he mentioned over and over again was the slogan ‘stop the boats.’
It seems that the PM is trying to play into the far-right fear of migrants, as a vote winner.
Sunak said today that he wanted to bring the level of net migration below the 500,000 people a year he inherited – leading to speculation he would commit to a new target
Migration
The PM is under increasing pressure after apparently abandoning the Tory manifesto commitment to reduce net migration to 2019 levels, of around 226,000.
The figure exceeded 500,000 in the year to June 2022, so a long way off what was promised.
“[The Prime Minister] said specifically ‘I won’t put a number on it’. We don’t know what the numbers will be next week and it’s right we take stock of those,” Downing Street said.
“But of course, the Prime Minister speaks to his Cabinet colleagues and the Home Secretary specifically, they’ve worked incredibly closely on the ‘stop the boats’ Bill and the work the Government’s taking forward to try and tackle illegal immigration.”
