A new viral video has slammed Suella Braverman over her claims over police numbers.
The government has hit its manifesto pledge to recruit 20,000 police officers. The pledge was made in 2019 ahead of the 2010 general election.
However, critics have pointed to cuts to police numbers since then and said the government in fact missed the deadline to hit the target, which was set for March this year.
Around 20,000 officers were lost as a result of budget cuts during austerity measures that started in 2010.
Liberal Democrats said Ms Braverman’s “boasts will ring hollow for communities that have seen community policing decimated under this government”.
Small boat criminals
It comes as Suella Braverman has said people who illegally enter the UK after crossing the Channel on small boats “possess values which are at odds with our country” and “heightened levels of criminality”.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Braverman said “some hundreds, thousands” of extra places would be needed, adding: “We’ve got an existing detention capacity of 1,000-2,000 places at the moment. We need to increase that – I’m not going to give you a precise figure.
“But what I’m saying is, we don’t need to increase it by 45,000 [the number who arrived by small boat in 2022], no one is saying that we need 45,000 or 100,000 new detention places.
“That’s because we want to design a scheme whereby if you arrive here illegally you will be detained and thereafter relocated to a safe country like Rwanda, or your home country if it’s safe.”
Video
In a new video Peter Stefanovic has slammed Braverman’s comments.
Peter shared the video and wrote: “Jeez. Home Secretary Suella Braverman is trumpeting Government will hit it’s target of 20,000 more police. How many times do I have to debunk this bull****. By now even Larry the cat knows it’s boll****! Get the FACTS here.”
