Feargal Sharkey isn’t holding back. On BBC News, the environmental campaigner and former musician delivered a strong message to water companies about the ongoing sewage crisis in the UK. Speaking from Lake Windermere, Sharkey wasn’t just frustrated – he was furious.
🚱 Privatisation’s Price
Sharkey’s anger comes amid growing concern over the privatisation of water services in England and Wales. Since privatisation 35 years ago, private water companies have taken £80 billion in profits. Meanwhile, they’ve racked up £50 billion in debt.
Critics argue that privatisation has led to rising water bills and serious environmental damage, including the sewage spills that are happening far too often in our rivers and lakes.
💸 The Growing Cost of Water
The water regulator, Ofwat, has been heavily criticised for letting water companies get away with a 25% increase in average water bills this week. People are fed up. With pollution on the rise and bills soaring, many are calling for the nationalisation of water services to bring things back into public control.
😡 Sharkey’s Fury
In his interview, Sharkey didn’t mince words. He tore into the water companies for allowing sewage to contaminate the country’s rivers and lakes, leaving the environment to suffer while they rake in profits. He’s not interested in hearing their excuses – he wants action.
Sharkey’s not done yet, though. He’s determined to keep calling out the companies and the government until something changes. No more empty promises – it’s time for accountability.
