At the end of last week Green Party Baroness Jenny Jones has tabled a Fatal Motion for 13 June, it is seen as a make-or-break moment for parliamentary democracy.
Jones is aiming to stop the government from using a ‘Ministerial decree’ to overturn a vote in the Lords.
This is the first time ever that a Government Minister has tried to use secondary legislation to directly overturn the will of Parliament.
“The Government lost a vote in the Lords on the Public Order Bill to change the interpretation of ‘serious disruption’ of other people’s day-to-day activities to mean ‘anything more than minor’. The Lords opposed this change by 254 votes to 240 only a few weeks ago.
“The government are now trying to reinsert this change via secondary legislation which has less Parliamentary scrutiny and can’t be amended in any way,” reports Green World.
Parliamentary democracy
In response, filmmaker Peter Stefanovic created another viral video slamming the goverment’s plan.
Peter shared the video and wrote: “This is a make-or-break moment for parliamentary democracy.
“What is the point of Parliament if a Minister can just ignore the outcome of debates and votes by imposing draconian laws on the public – all opposition party’s must stand together
“Everyone needs to watch this!”
Reactions
1.
“You are right Peter. Every Party with respect for democracy and the sovereignty of Parliament must vote in favour of this Fatal Motion. This is no time for political manoeuvring or game-playing. I particularly hope @UKLabour and @Keir_Starmer are paying attention.”
2.
“The electorate are slowly becoming aware that a parliamentary democracy is a democracy in name only !”
3.
“Screwing us over, one evil bill after another.”
4.
“With everyday that passes this corrupt #Tory government gets closer and closer to dictatorship.”
5.
Jenny Jones herself tweeted: “This sounds minor, but it isn’t. We must all care. It’s part of a trend with this Govt for back door power grabs. A panicky attempt to stay in power as long as possible.”
