During Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to the White House, US Senator JD Vance decided to play host in the most patronising way possible.
His big question? Whether Zelenskyy had ever actually said “thank you” to the US for its support.
Because, apparently, defending your country from invasion isn’t gratitude enough.
Vance dismisses UK troops and takes a swipe at Britain
Not content with just belittling a war-time leader, Vance also took aim at the UK and France.
He dismissed plans to send 20,000 British and French troops to Ukraine as a peacekeeping force, mocking the UK as “some random country that hasn’t fought a war in 30 or 40 years.”
For context, British troops have served in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, and countless peacekeeping missions in the last three decades.
Meanwhile, Vance went on to declare that “the only guy in town with a strategy is the President of the United States, and everybody needs to follow his lead.”
Because nothing says diplomacy like belittling allies and handing Putin a morale boost on a silver platter.
White House praise doesn’t go down well
Despite the bizarre exchange, the White House press team decided this was worth celebrating.
They shared a tweet praising Vance’s questioning of Zelenskyy, as if humiliating an ally on the world stage was some kind of masterstroke.
Spoiler: The internet wasn’t having it.
Social media users swiftly tore into the White House’s bizarre praise, with many pointing out that Vance’s remarks did nothing but give Russia exactly what it wanted.
Who needs enemies when you have moments like this?
The White House press team was clearly amazed by this line of questioning, as you can see (below).
