Andrew Neil has had an epiphany. Turns out, Donald Trump might not be the best bloke after all. Who could have seen that coming?
Writing in The Daily Mail, Neil declared:
“Donald Trump is an unprincipled, narcissistic charlatan who doesn’t give a damn about democracy.”
It’s a bold statement, but he admits he once gave Trump the benefit of the doubt. However, the former president’s recent behaviour has changed his mind.
Giving Trump a Second Chance? Bad Idea
Neil initially hoped that if Trump got another shot at the presidency, he’d be more mature, less erratic, and aware of the dignity the role demands. But that optimism didn’t last.
“Well, how wrong can you be?”
He says the past week has confirmed his worst fears: Trump hasn’t changed, and deep down, even those who gave him a chance probably knew he wouldn’t.
Backing the Dictator, Punishing the Victim
Neil didn’t hold back on Trump’s stance on Ukraine. He pointed out that the war isn’t complicated:
- Russia is the invader.
- Ukraine is the victim.
- Ukraine wants democracy. Russia hates it.
Yet somehow, Trump sides with the invader and penalises the victim. According to Neil, that’s proof the world has turned upside down.
“Europe, with Britain playing a pivotal role, must do all it can to fill the gaps, as it’s already starting to do.”
Does Trump Even Know What Peace Means?
Neil warned that forcing Ukraine to surrender to Russia could hand Putin more land than he ever dreamed of. And he questions whether Trump even understands the difference between peace and capitulation.
“What can he care of democracy in Ukraine when he encouraged the mob to overthrow the result of a democratic election in America?”
For Neil, Trump’s true colours were clear on January 6, 2021. That was the moment he believes the world saw the real Donald Trump—and he wasn’t even trying to hide it.
