The Daily Mail has put a unique spin on the recent scandal involving Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, who resigned on Tuesday (12 November). A report had revealed a “conspiracy of silence” around John Smyth QC, a barrister accused of being one of the Church of England’s most prolific abusers.
Archbishop’s Resignation Over Abuse Scandal
Welby faced mounting pressure to resign after accusations emerged that he failed to alert authorities about Smyth’s abuse of children and young men. Acknowledging his role, Welby stated, “It is very clear I must take personal and institutional responsibility for the long and retraumatising period between 2013 and 2024.”
He added that the Makin review highlighted “historic safeguarding failures,” expressing shame over the Church’s role in allowing the abuse to remain hidden. Although Welby said he had attempted improvements during his tenure, he ultimately stepped down, stating that it was in the “best interests of the Church of England.”
Daily Mail Claims Royal Connection Played a Part
In a surprising twist, the Daily Mail suggested that Welby’s connection to Harry and Meghan contributed to his downfall. Cameron Roy, a commentator, claimed Welby “fell under the spell” of the Sussexes while preparing for their wedding and officiating their son Archie’s christening. Roy argued that this friendship “raised questions about his judgement,” which, according to the Daily Mail, contributed to Welby’s resignation.
