Former US President Barack Obama took a playful jab at his successor, Donald Trump, during a campaign event in Pennsylvania on Thursday night. The joke, which had the crowd in stitches, occurred as Obama discussed Vice President Kamala Harris’ plan to ease the financial burden on parents with a $6,000 (£4,598) tax credit to help cover the costs of raising children.
“She wants to make it easier to afford things like a crib, a car seat, or diapers,” Obama said. He then shared a personal anecdote about the shock he experienced when buying diapers after his first daughter was born in 1998.
“I remember changing diapers,” he said. “Do you think Donald Trump ever changed a diaper?”
The crowd erupted with laughter, and someone shouted, “His own!” in response. Obama pointed into the crowd and quipped, “I almost said that. But I decided I shouldn’t say it,” drawing even more laughter.
Interestingly, Trump has already answered this question. In a 2005 radio interview, Trump admitted he had never changed any of his children’s diapers, saying, “No, I don’t do that” and that it’s “not my thing.” He further explained his parenting philosophy in another 2005 interview, saying, “I won’t do anything to take care of them. I’ll supply funds and she’ll take care of the kids,” referring to his wife, Melania Trump.
Obama’s light-hearted joke hit home for many in the crowd, adding to his signature style of witty commentary while highlighting important policy initiatives, like Harris’ plan to support families.
