Elon Musk, CEO of X and Tesla, appeared onstage with Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. During his speech, Musk made several false claims, including that Democrats plan to take away Americans’ rights to free speech, bear arms, and vote.
Trump introduced Musk as the man who “saved free speech” and praised his company, SpaceX, for enabling American astronauts to return to space. Musk wore a “Make America Great Again” hat and referred to himself as “dark MAGA,” referencing a far-right meme.
Musk took aim at President Joe Biden, criticizing his physical health and comparing him to Trump. He praised Trump for his resilience after being grazed by a bullet during an assassination attempt in July.
Musk falsely claimed that Democrats were trying to eliminate elections in the U.S. He warned the audience that the upcoming election is “the most important of our lifetime” and said, “If Democrats win, this could be the last election.”
Despite making political statements, Musk does not have a political background. After his speech, Trump joked that he didn’t fully understand Musk’s satellite internet service, Starlink, which was used to help restore communications after Hurricane Helene.
Critics have long suspected Musk’s alignment with right-wing politics. He frequently complains about the “woke mind virus” on X and has shown support for far-right ideologies. Earlier this year, Musk endorsed Trump for president and pledged financial support for his campaign, though he later backed out of the commitment.
Musk has also been a major donor to Republican figures, contributing millions to figures like Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. If Trump is re-elected, he plans to appoint Musk to a task force aimed at cutting government spending.
Musk’s influence extends to X, where he has allowed previously banned accounts to return and reduced efforts to combat disinformation. This growing alliance between Musk and Trump reflects their shared political interests and goals.
