As Donald Trump escalates his trade war with Canada, the European Movement has launched a campaign to forge closer ties between Europe and Canada. Their goal? Strengthen cultural, political, and trade relations while standing firm against authoritarianism and economic instability.
Trump has repeatedly mocked Justin Trudeau, even calling him “Governor Trudeau”, and at one point, joking about making Canada the 51st US state.
Trade War Tensions Spark Global Concern
This week, Trump suddenly reversed his 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports, just days after imposing them. In response, Canada paused its own retaliatory tariffs—but Trudeau made it clear that tensions with the US aren’t going away anytime soon.
“Our goal remains to get these tariffs, all tariffs, removed,” Trudeau stated.
Financial experts warn that these US-Canada tensions could destabilise global markets. In this climate, Europe sees an opportunity to step in.
The European Movement’s Vision for Canada
The European Movement believes Canada and the EU should stand together against Trump’s unpredictable leadership. In a post on X, Guy Verhofstadt, President of European Movement International, made his stance clear:
“As Trump attacks allies and embraces autocrats, Europe and Canada must unite to defend democracy, liberty, and the rule of law. We invite our Canadian friends to help build a movement that resists those who threaten our fundamental rights and freedoms.”
The organisation is urging people to back its European Movement Canada initiative, hoping to gain enough momentum to influence policymakers.
Could Canada Ever Join the EU?
While some have floated the idea of Canada joining the EU, the European Movement says that decision is ultimately up to the EU and its member states. However, they promise to fully support Canada’s aspirations if it ever pursues membership.
For now, the focus is on building a long-term alliance, ensuring that Canada and Europe stand together against economic and political instability.
