Nathan Gill, the former leader of Reform UK in Wales, has appeared in court facing accusations of accepting bribes linked to Russia. The 51-year-old from Llangefni, Anglesey, is charged with eight counts of bribery and one count of conspiracy to commit bribery.
Bribes for Pro-Russia Statements?
The case centres around Mr Gill’s alleged dealings with Oleg Voloshyn, a former Ukrainian politician. The court claims that Gill, who served as a UKIP and later Brexit Party MEP from 2014 to 2020, received money in exchange for making statements in the European Parliament that would favour Russia.
The Case Against Gill
Appearing via video link at Westminster Magistrates Court, Gill confirmed his name, birthdate, and address. He is said to have made specific pro-Russia statements on at least eight occasions, including in the European Parliament and to media outlets like 112 Ukraine. These statements reportedly aimed to support Russia’s narrative on the situation in Ukraine.
Evidence Found at Manchester Airport
The case took a dramatic turn when, in September 2021, Mr Gill was stopped at Manchester Airport under anti-terrorism legislation. His mobile phone was seized, revealing communications with Mr Voloshyn and evidence of their financial arrangement. The Crown says Mr Gill agreed to make the statements for money, benefiting Russia’s stance on Ukraine.
Former MEP with a Complex History
Mr Gill’s political career has seen him represent Wales in both the UK and European Parliaments. He first became a UKIP MEP in 2014 and briefly served as a Welsh Assembly Member. He later joined Reform UK and led their 2021 Welsh Parliament election campaign.
While charges have been authorised against Mr Voloshyn, he remains outside the jurisdiction.
What’s Next?
Mr Gill was granted bail, with conditions including surrendering his passport and refraining from contacting Mr Voloshyn. He is scheduled to appear at the Old Bailey on March 14th. The case continues to unfold, and it’s one to watch closely.
