Israel has just revealed plans to seize large areas of the Gaza Strip, marking a significant shift in the ongoing conflict. Defence Minister Israel Katz made the announcement on Wednesday, as Israel ramped up both aerial and ground operations in Gaza.
🚨 Katz’s Statement
Katz stated that Israeli troops would be deployed to clear areas held by terrorists and take control of significant portions of the Gaza Strip. This newly acquired land, Katz explained, would be incorporated into Israel’s “security areas.”
Meanwhile, Katz urged Palestinian civilians to evacuate these areas immediately, advising them to “act now” to overthrow Hamas and secure the release of hostages.
💣 Escalating Violence
The announcement follows a night of intense Israeli airstrikes on Khan Younis and Rafah in southern Gaza, leaving at least 21 people dead. The toll included five women, one of whom was pregnant, as well as two children. Hospitals in Gaza reported the arrival of their bodies early Wednesday morning.
Along with these attacks, reports also emerged of further airstrikes on Gaza City, while Israeli troops were seen moving through Rafah.
🚨 The Bigger Picture
Since the conflict began in October 2023, Israel has steadily gained control of Gaza’s peripheral areas, with the IDF (Israel Defence Forces) having seized roughly 17% of the Gaza Strip. Despite these efforts, the violence continues to escalate, with the humanitarian situation worsening.
The recent airstrikes have left thousands displaced, with the UN estimating over 140,000 people fleeing their homes since the ceasefire ended. Over 90% of Gaza’s population has been forced to leave their homes during the ongoing conflict.
🕊️ A Failed Truce
The conflict reached new heights after the ceasefire collapsed in March, with continued military operations and no breakthrough in peace talks. Efforts led by Qatar and Egypt to mediate a resolution have yet to yield any tangible results.
