Jonathan Gullis, former Conservative MP for Stoke-on-Trent North, has shared his struggles to land a job following his General Election defeat.
After serving just one term in Parliament, Gullis was swept out of his seat as the Red Wall’s Tory dominance crumbled. Winning the constituency in 2019 during the North and Midlands shift away from Labour, his time in office was anything but dull.
From MP to Job Seeker
Reflecting on his post-politics life, Gullis admitted, “It’s tough, but you just have to keep putting one foot in front of the other.” He revealed that securing interviews for permanent roles has been harder than expected.
Controversial Campaign Moments
Gullis’s campaign trail wasn’t without drama. Eyebrows were raised when he was seen canvassing alongside a convicted heroin dealer—a move that Labour called hypocritical, given Gullis’s own scathing remarks about anti-social behaviour.
During his tenure, the former MP didn’t mince his words, famously branding drug dealers and troublemakers as “savages,” “scroats,” and “scumbags.”
Bizarre Claims in Office
Gullis also made headlines for stranger reasons. He claimed to have installed “bulletproof clingfilm” at his home, citing safety concerns. And who could forget his explanation for skipping a major Post Office scandal drama? “I’ve been too busy watching Paw Patrol,” he said.
Moving Forward
As Gullis navigates life beyond Westminster, it’s clear he’s facing an uphill battle. Whether his colourful past will hinder or help his career remains to be seen.
