Keir Starmer’s brief meeting with pop star Taylor Swift has left many people on social media feeling less than enthusiastic.
According to Sky News, the prime minister and his family spoke with Swift for about 10 minutes during her Wembley Stadium concert nearly two months ago. The meeting came at no cost to Starmer, as the tickets were free.
Discussing Tragedy and Security
During the conversation, Starmer and Swift reportedly discussed the Southport stabbings, a tragic incident where three young girls were killed during a Swift-themed yoga and dance class in late July.
This meeting has also raised questions about the government’s involvement in security arrangements for Swift’s London concerts. Just days after a terror scare at one of her shows in Austria, Swift was given a police escort in London, typically reserved for senior royals and top politicians. This decision raised eyebrows, especially after the Metropolitan Police initially declined to offer such security.
Questions Surrounding Swift’s Security
Reports later emerged that Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and London Mayor Sadiq Khan encouraged the Met Police to offer Swift a “VVIP escort.” However, Downing Street has denied any government involvement in securing Swift’s police escort, maintaining that it was strictly a police decision.
In addition, there were allegations that senior government officials received free tickets to the concert in exchange for Swift’s police escort. In response to this controversy, Starmer ultimately paid for the tickets to the show himself.
Social Media Reactions
Despite the media attention, Starmer’s meeting with Swift didn’t seem to stir much excitement on social media. Users filled platforms like X (formerly Twitter) with sarcasm, downplaying the significance of the meeting compared to more serious political issues. Many viewed the interaction as a minor distraction from larger scandals in recent years.
