Prime Minister Keir Starmer has declared that the UK “stands with Israel” following British military involvement in repelling Iranian missile attacks on Israeli targets. Starmer addressed the nation from 10 Downing Street after nearly 200 missiles were fired at Israel.
In his statement, Starmer strongly condemned Iran’s actions and emphasised the UK’s commitment to supporting Israel in defending itself against aggression.
“Iran has menaced the Middle East for far too long,” Starmer said. “We stand with Israel and recognise her right to self-defence in the face of this aggression. Iran must stop these attacks, which have brought chaos and destruction, not only to Israel but to the people living in Lebanon and beyond.”
He continued, “Make no mistake, Britain stands full square against such violence. We support Israel’s reasonable demand for the security of its people.”
British Forces Play Key Role
Defence Secretary John Healey confirmed that British forces were actively involved in preventing further escalation in the Middle East. He praised their professionalism and bravery in assisting Israel’s defence.
“I completely condemn Iran’s attack against Israel,” Healey said. “British forces have played their part in attempts to prevent further escalation, and I want to thank all personnel involved for their courage.”
Healey also noted that British troops stationed in Cyprus are on standby, ready to assist in the evacuation of UK nationals from Lebanon as tensions rise amid fears of Israeli reprisals.
Tensions Rise in the Middle East
The missile strikes from Iran came in retaliation for the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut last week, according to reports from the Associated Press. The incident has dramatically escalated tensions in the region, especially following Israel’s recent ground offensive in Lebanon, described by Israeli authorities as “limited, localised operations.”
Starmer’s message comes at a time when international attention is focused on the growing conflict in the Middle East, with concerns that the violence could spread beyond Israel and Lebanon.
As the situation unfolds, the UK government remains committed to supporting Israel’s right to self-defence while calling for calm and restraint to prevent further escalation.
