Labour is facing intense scrutiny after standing by one of its parliamentary candidates who issued an apology for making controversial remarks regarding Israel’s role in the 7 October attacks allegedly orchestrated by Hamas. Azhar Ali, Labour’s candidate in the Rochdale by-election, has come under fire for suggesting that Israel intentionally allowed the attacks to provide a pretext for invading Gaza.
The comments made by Ali have sparked renewed criticism over antisemitism within the Labour Party, reminiscent of the challenges faced during Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership tenure. Joe Glasman, Head of Political and Government Investigations at the Campaign Against Antisemitism, condemned Labour’s support for Ali, stating, “This man does not belong in a major political party, let alone in parliament, yet Labour is, incredibly, still backing his candidacy after a quick apology.”
Ali’s controversial remarks were recorded during a meeting of the Lancashire Labour party, where he alleged that Israel relaxed security measures despite prior warnings of an imminent threat. He later apologized for the “deeply offensive” remarks, acknowledging their ignorance and falsity. Despite his apology, concerns linger over the impact of his statements and their potential to reignite tensions within the Jewish community.
The Labour Party has stood by Ali, with national campaign coordinator Pat McFadden acknowledging the inappropriateness of Ali’s comments but emphasizing his issued apology. However, the Jewish Labour Movement has announced it will refrain from campaigning in Rochdale due to Ali’s remarks, although it stopped short of demanding his removal as a candidate.
Meanwhile, the Conservative Party has called for Ali’s campaign to be suspended and for his Labour Party membership to be revoked. Cabinet Minister Michael Gove has criticized Labour leader Keir Starmer’s support for Ali’s candidacy, asserting that such support cannot continue in light of the controversy.
With the deadline for removing Ali from the ballot paper passed, the Labour Party faces growing pressure to address the fallout from his remarks, which have reignited concerns over antisemitism and political sensitivity surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
