It seems many Britons are fed up with the fallout from Brexit. A petition urging the UK to rejoin the European Union “as soon as possible” has now hit the 100,000-signature mark. More than five years on from the official exit, a growing number of people believe Brexit has gone terribly wrong.
Celebrities, voters – even Farage admits it
Not only have high-profile figures like Alan Sugar and Jeremy Clarkson voiced their dismay, but even some who initially supported Brexit are now regretting it. Remarkably, even Nigel Farage—once a staunch supporter of leaving the EU—has repeatedly admitted that Brexit has been a disaster for the country.
Momentum builds after the five-year mark
The petition, launched last November, has regained steam following the five-year anniversary of Brexit. Alastair Campbell shared it on X (formerly Twitter) with the comment:
“Anything that gets the facts about the disaster of Brexit out there has to be a good thing.”
With the petition now surpassing 100,000 signatures, it must be considered for parliamentary debate.
A familiar story – will this one be different?
Sceptics warn that this petition is unlikely to lead to any real change. It joins a long list of similar calls, such as last year’s demand for a general election, which ended up going nowhere. In response, the government stated in November that it was “elected on a manifesto that made clear there will be no return to EU membership.” They did add that they remain “determined to reset the UK-EU relationship, putting it on a more solid footing” – a message echoed by Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Chancellor Rachel Reeves.
Will the tide finally turn?
As more and more people sign the petition, the debate about Brexit’s lasting impact continues to grow. Whether this petition will spark a change or simply join the ranks of many that have gone nowhere remains to be seen. For now, the voices calling for the UK to rejoin the EU are louder than ever.
