A petition demanding a general election just months after the last one has gained worldwide attention, with signatories from 184 countries. It even includes a few from the British Antarctic Territory, which, fun fact, doesn’t actually have a permanent population.
A Global Call for a New Election
The petition, launched on the government’s official petitions site, has gathered millions of signatures since it went live. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, never one to shy away from a dramatic statement, declared that he’s “never seen anything like it.”
Elon Musk Gets Involved
The petition caught the eye of Elon Musk, who shared a tweet supporting it. He claimed, “The people of Britain have had enough of a tyrannical police state.” In true Musk fashion, he also reposted a tweet from the far-right account Inevitable West, which falsely suggested that Labour will soon have to govern without a mandate. Because, of course, that was necessary.
A Global Petition: Beyond the UK
While the petition is about the UK, it has gathered signatures from all corners of the globe. In fact, people in 184 countries have lent their support, from China to the United Arab Emirates and even the British Antarctic Territory, where nine people have managed to find their way to the petition – even though there’s no permanent population there.
Australia leads the way after the UK with nearly 3,000 signatures, while Spain follows with over 2,000. The United States and Canada have both contributed more than 1,000 names each.
