London Mayor Sadiq Khan has accused Donald Trump of racism, claiming the former President targeted him due to his ethnicity and faith. Speaking on the High Performance podcast, Khan suggested that Trump’s criticism was motivated by his skin colour and Islamic beliefs.
Khan, who faced several attacks from Trump during his first term in office, described the Republican’s policies as “sexist, homophobic, Islamophobic, and racist”. He added that Trump’s decision to “come for me” was personal. “If I wasn’t this colour or a practising Muslim, he wouldn’t have targeted me,” Khan stated.
Khan’s Response to Trump’s Comments
Despite the tension, Khan expressed openness to hosting Trump in London. “I’d show him around if he visits the UK,” he said. However, the Mayor has previously criticised Trump’s views on Muslims, even calling for his UK visits to be cancelled.
During Trump’s previous term, he criticised Khan’s handling of the London Bridge terror attack, labelling him “a stone-cold loser” and “very dumb”. Reflecting on these remarks, Khan said, “It affects me and my family, but the real concern is his influence as the leader of the free world.”
Khan Stands Firm on Speaking Out
Khan acknowledged the importance of speaking against harmful policies, saying, “I have a responsibility to stand up when policies impact not just Londoners but people worldwide.” He expressed his willingness to continue speaking up, emphasising the global impact of American policies.
Concern Over Trump’s Re-election Impact
Following last week’s election, Khan voiced concern for Londoners feeling uneasy about Trump’s potential return to office. “Many are anxious about democracy, women’s rights, the situation in the Middle East, NATO’s future, and climate action,” he said.
On Trump’s last UK visit, tens of thousands protested in London, with the famous Trump baby blimp flown over the city. If Trump visits again, Khan expects similar reactions, adding that many are apprehensive about what a second Trump presidency might mean for international relations.
