Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has come under fire for a political remark aimed at Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer during the weekly Prime Minister’s Questions session in the House of Commons, particularly as the mother of Brianna Ghey, a transgender individual, was present.
In a heated exchange, Sunak criticized Starmer, alleging broken promises, including one related to the definition of a woman. Sunak stated, “We are bringing the waiting lists down for the longest waiters and making progress, but it is a bit rich to hear about promises from someone who has broken every single promise he was elected on.” He further highlighted various issues where he claims Starmer has failed to deliver on commitments.
Starmer, in response, expressed dismay at Sunak’s timing, especially with Brianna Ghey’s mother present in the chamber. He rebuked Sunak, saying, “Of all the weeks to say that – when Brianna’s mother is in this chamber. Shame.” Starmer emphasized the importance of the prime minister ensuring the safety and respect of every citizen, a sentiment he felt Sunak did not share.
Earlier in the session, Starmer had acknowledged the presence of Brianna Ghey’s mother Esther in the public gallery, citing her daughter’s recent tragedy. Brianna Ghey’s killers received sentencing, with the judge considering the “sadistic” and “transphobic hostility” exhibited by the perpetrators.
The exchange highlighted the ongoing debate over transgender rights and the responsibility of political leaders to foster inclusivity and respect for all citizens. Sunak’s remarks drew criticism for their perceived insensitivity and inappropriate timing, particularly in the presence of individuals directly affected by the issue at hand.
