Donald Trump has dropped his boldest comments yet about running for a third term as president. In an exclusive phone interview with NBC News, he made it clear he wasn’t “joking” about the idea.
🗣️ “A Lot of People Want Me to Do It”
Trump spoke with NBC’s Kristen Welker on Sunday, where he discussed the notion of staying in office beyond 2028. “A lot of people want me to do it,” he said. But he also stressed that he’s currently focused on his “current term.”
Still, when pressed about his interest in a third term – which would make him 82 – Trump said, “I like working. I’m not joking.”
🚨 The ‘Methods’ for a Third Term
Trump didn’t just leave it at that. He hinted that he’s been presented with “methods” to bypass the 22nd Amendment, which currently limits presidents to two terms. When asked about one possible scenario, Trump mentioned Vice President JD Vance potentially running for office and then stepping down so Trump could take over. He added, “There are others too,” but declined to go into more detail.
🔎 What Would It Take?
While Trump is exploring ways to extend his time in office, making a third term a reality would be incredibly difficult. The Constitution would need to be amended, requiring two-thirds of Congress or two-thirds of the states to approve a convention. After that, three-quarters of the states would need to ratify the change.
👀 A Third-Term Push?
Despite the challenges, Trump’s supporters haven’t ruled out the idea. Back in January, Trump ally Representative Andy Ogles introduced a measure to begin the process of revising the 22nd Amendment.
While some Republicans have brushed off Trump’s third-term talk as a joke, his latest comments show he’s still thinking seriously about it. Whether or not it’s actually feasible remains to be seen, but it’s clear that Trump isn’t shutting the door on a third term just yet.
