Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has made his stance on Donald Trump crystal clear. According to him, the former president’s handling of Ukraine makes him look like a Putin ally—whether he realises it or not.
Trump’s tense Oval Office showdown with Zelenskyy
On Friday, Trump berated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a heated Oval Office meeting. He accused Ukraine of ingratitude, hinted that their actions could spark World War III, and even parroted Russian talking points.
In recent weeks, Trump has falsely blamed Ukraine for starting the war and even called Zelenskyy a “dictator”. Meanwhile, Putin continues his invasion, which began in February 2022.
Christie, once an ally of Trump, had a blunt response.
Christie: Trump needs to realise how he looks
Speaking on ABC’s This Week, Christie urged Trump to take a step back and acknowledge how his words are perceived.
“What the president needs to understand is that he looks and sounds like an ally of Putin.”
That’s not a great look for someone vying to be leader of the free world.
No room for negotiation with Putin?
Christie also took aim at Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who suggested bringing Putin to the negotiating table.
His response? Tougher measures are needed.
“You can get someone to the table in a number of ways. It’s not just through honey.”
He argued that the U.S. must continue supporting Ukraine to force Putin into a position where he has no choice but to negotiate.
In other words: strength, not appeasement.
