Britain’s economy isn’t looking great. With the Spring Statement looming, the government is preparing to slash public spending again, while also cutting civil service jobs.
But who’s to blame? Former Brexit negotiator Lord David Frost has some ideas – and they don’t include Brexit.
🎤 BBC presenter puts Frost on the spot
During an appearance on Politics Live, Frost claimed the UK’s economic woes were Labour’s fault. However, BBC presenter Jo Coburn wasn’t having it.
She pointed out that Brexit itself had created more bureaucracy and more regulation – the very things Frost and his supporters claim to despise.
Frost, clearly unimpressed, shot back:
“Some things were done in Brussels we now need to do for ourselves, but that is a tiny number.”
His argument? The real problem is the government adding extra regulation, not Brexit itself.
💼 Lib Dem MP shuts Frost down – with facts
Liberal Democrat MP Munira Wilson wasn’t buying it. She argued that Brexit had massively damaged the economy, hurting businesses up and down the country.
“The best way we can kickstart growth is by negotiating a far better deal with our European friends and neighbours,” she said.
She also pointed out that businesses in her own constituency are drowning in Brexit-related red tape, spending fortunes just to keep trading.
Frost dismissed this, saying:
“Anybody can come up with anecdotes about extra paperwork. The important thing is to look at the macro-picture, what’s happening to the economy.”
Big mistake.
Wilson wasn’t about to let that slide. She cut in:
“It is not just anecdotes! We know that our exports to the EU are down £27 billion. We know that four out of ten British goods that were on European shelves before Brexit are gone.”
“How is that an anecdote? That is cold hard fact – and your hard Brexit is damaging our economy.”
💰 The real cost of Brexit
Wilson didn’t stop there. She made it clear: if the government is serious about economic growth, it needs to renegotiate the UK’s EU deal. Less red tape, more trade, and a shot at economic recovery.
But with Frost still in denial, it doesn’t look like Brexit backers are ready to admit their deal isn’t working.
