Sir Keir Starmer has avoided directly addressing claims of genocide in Gaza — despite growing pressure to speak out.
Starmer Sidesteps Question on Gaza Crisis
Sir Keir Starmer faced a direct challenge in the Commons today over Israel’s actions in Gaza — and sidestepped it entirely.
Independent MP Zarah Sultana, who was suspended from the Labour whip, called out the Prime Minister’s silence. She reminded him of his October 2023 support for Israel cutting off vital supplies to Gaza.
“For eleven days now, Israel has blocked vital aid into Gaza, subjecting over two million people to collective punishment and starvation,” Sultana said.
She highlighted that Israel’s decision to cut off electricity to a plant supplying drinking water to 500,000 people was a clear breach of international law.
“This is further evidence of genocide against the Palestinian people,” she added, urging Starmer to call it what it is.
‘Risking’ International Law — But No Mention of Genocide
Starmer responded cautiously.
He said he was “appalled” by Israel’s actions, admitting they “risk breaking international humanitarian law.”
But he stopped short of labelling it genocide.
Sultana wasn’t impressed. She later remarked that Starmer had “dodged the question.”
Growing Pressure on Labour’s Leadership
This exchange comes as pressure mounts on Starmer to take a clearer stance on the Gaza crisis.
Critics argue that his reluctance to condemn Israel outright risks damaging Labour’s reputation on human rights and foreign policy.
Meanwhile, Sultana and other independent MPs continue to demand that Starmer and his government stop sidestepping the issue.
